Game of Thrones – Important battles lined up in Phase V of Lok Sabha polls

Phase after phase, battle after battle- as Lok Sabha elections cross over to their second-half, we bring you the important battles lined up in Phase V. Let’s begin!

Koderma, Jharkhand

Key contestants: Babulal Marandi (JVM), Annapurna Devi Yadav (BJP), Rajkumar Yadav (CPIM)

In this triangular contest, Jharkhand’s first chief minister Babulal Marandi, BJP’s Annapurna Devi Yadav and Rajkumar Yadav of the CPIM will battle it out with one another. Marandi has earlier won this seat on a BJP ticket in 2004, as an independent in 2006 bypolls, and for JVM in 2009. In 2014, BJP’s Ravindra Kumar Ray had won this seat defeating Rajkumar Yadav of the CPIM by over 1 lac votes.

Anantnag, Jammu & Kashmir

Key contestants: Mehbooba Mufti (PDP), Ghulam Mir (INC), Hasnain Masood (JKNC)

This seat has remained vacant for three years ever since Mufti resigned to become the Chief Minister of the state in 2016. Anantnag is going to polls over three phases in view of the surge in terrorist activities. Nearly a year after a bitter split with the BJP, Mufti is the fray from her family borough yet again where she now faces a challenge from Congress’ Ghulam Mir and NC’s Hasnain Masood.

Jaipur Rural, Rajasthan

Key contestants: Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore (BJP), Krishna Punia (INC)

Jaipur Rural will witness a contest between two Olympians– Sitting BJP MP Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore and Sadulpur Congress MLA Krishna Punia. In 2014, Rathore had defeated Congress’ CP Joshi by a margin of over 3 lac votes.

Amethi, Uttar Pradesh

Key contestants: Rahul Gandhi (INC), Smriti Irani (BJP)

All eyes will be on Amethi as BJP’s Smriti Irani challenges Congress President Rahul Gandhi on his home turf yet again! From raking up local issues to firefighting, Irani, has come out firing on all cylinders for this high optic battle for which she has been preparing for long. But will Irani be able to make an impact? The answer could lie in previous vote shares. In 2009, Rahul Gandhi polled 71.78% of votes against BJP’s 14.54%. In 2014, however, Gandhi’s vote share plummeted to 46.71% against Irani’s 34.38%– a drop of 25 percentage points.

Rae Bareli, Uttar Pradesh

Kay contestants: Sonia Gandhi (INC), Dinesh Pratap Singh (BJP)

Rae Bareli, the second Gandhi bastion in Uttar Pradesh goes to polls in phase V. Congress chairperson Sonia Gandhi is in the fray for the fifth time. Challenging her is Dinesh Pratap Singh, a former Congress MLC who switched to the BJP in 2018. Rae Bareli is perhaps the most high profile seat in the country. Jawaharlal Nehru, Feroze Gandhi, and Indira Gandhi have all contested from this seat.

Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh

Key contestants: Rajnath Singh (BJP), Poonam Sinha (SP)

Home Minister Rajnath Singh is seeking a second term from Lucknow. The SP has roped in yesteryear Bollywood actress and Shatrughan Sinha’s wife, Poonam Sinha to contest against him. The Congress has fielded Acharya Pramod Krishnan despite SP’s outreach for support.
